ANNE RICE’S MAYFAIR WITCHES SERIES

started off interesting and a bit bewitching and beguiling however in this week’s episode, the character of #CiprienGrieve played by actor #TongayiChirisa totally confused me from the second he appeared on my screen because he is NOT in Anne Rice’s novel. What he is – is a mix of 2 characters. To be exact 2 male characters combined into one actor who is a black man. They casted a black actor to romance the lead female and he’s not even good looking. They did it because they are always doing this – shoving black male characters down our collective throats and if you disagree like I ALWAYS DO then they call you names like RACIST.

Well, I’ll cop to being a racist any day of the week and I dare anyone including Kimmie’s so called liberal husband who says he isn’t has also said and thought racist things. My objection to this TREND will be considered racist by the people on social media who read this post however while I admit to being racist at times as we all are, the use of a black actor in this story is insulting to black people for the one and only simple reason this character exists in a series where he never did before – so the lead female and he can go #MANDINGO. The only reason these “screenwriters” who wrote the script merged two of the most important male characters in this novel, one of them a main character, #MICHAELCURRY, is solely to have the black man fuck the white female lead. That is the only way I can phrase this and it is the #truth. This is the trend Hollywood, print media, advertising and other mediums are bending towards while cops continue to murder black people in the streets of our country – forcing the American public to watch black male actors romance beautiful white actresses for the sake of shock value is boring and does a disservice to the black actor who’s talents could best be served elsewhere in another show where he has an important reason for being in that script and not as token penis to piss off everyone watching the show.

Tongayi Chirisa plays Ciprien Grieve, a new character created for the show. Ciprien is a fusion of the two characters from the novel series: Michael Curry and Aaron Lightner. Rowan revived Michael after he nearly died from drowning. He shares something with the Mayfairs, the knowledge of Lasher, who he saw once as a kid and never forgot about it. Aaron Lightner is a member of a secret society and is drawn to the Mayfair witches. The trailer shows Ciprien guiding Rowan through her discovery of this magical other world, and there may be romance involved if the TV series follows the books.

No offence to the black actor, #TongayiChirisa who’s not a bad actor but completely unnecessary in the script because he is not a real character nor does he represent a real character from the novel. #MICHAELCURRY is a key character in the novel and the other key character #AARONLIGHTNERI and frankly I could not warm up to character #CiprienGrieve because he does not exist in the books and I have no idea what he was doing there. I will not speak for the late author #ANNERICE but I have the feeling she would have been less than thrilled with this additional character.

In fact I couldn’t watch the series further than last week. I started to watch this week’s episode but suddenly they were in bed, fucking and there is no real reason why that should be happening.

The writers who wrote the series THE VAMPIRE LASTAT for series TV also screwed up when they wrote vampire LOUIS who was the beautiful BRAD PITT in the film – as a black man who was a pimp who owned a whore house. We stopped watching that series too.

LaSTAT & LOUIS in the TV SERIES “INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE”-the vampire on the right is a black man portraying LOUIS…pardon the pun – night and day from the original below

If Anne Rice was alive today I would tell her – I have a camera, my writing partner has a camera and we know another videographer and plenty of filmmakers – let’s shoot your books on our own and you can write the script.

The only way to get things the way you know it shouLd be done because you wrote the damn thing is TO SHOOT IT YOURSELF.

Here is an article saying pretty much what I just wrote. Happy reading and frankly if you disagree with me & want to write a comment do so without being angry. I did not write this post in anger but I am sick of seeing MANDINGO in every single TV show and movie and print media out there. Hollywood has to stop pushing this agenda especially with classic stories from novel writers like #ANNERICE who trusted them with their material.

FROM SALON:

Anne Rice’s journal archives point to issues she would have had with AMC’s “Mayfair Witches”

After combing through Rice’s journal archives, I think this adaptation would have her turning in her tomb

Once Anne Rice began to gain notoriety as an author after the 1976 release of her debut novel, “Interview with the Vampire,” it wasn’t long before big name production companies began circling, clamoring for the rights to her work so that it could be adapted for TV and film.

Throughout her career, Rice kept extensive journals chronicling her private life, her pre-manuscript musings on each of her novels, and her business dealings — jotting down frustrations over editor notes, royalties and takeaways from conversations regarding yet another failed studio script based on her work — amidst side commentary on the episodes of “Kojak” and “Miami Vice” that she enjoyed watching on such and such night.

After Rice’s death in 2021, these journals, along with her novel drafts and a treasure trove of fan correspondence, were put into the care of Tulane University, which painstakingly archived it all into a collection that may be viewed by the public for the first time ever, by appointment.

Earlier this week I spent four hours at the archive, and only made it through one box of journals. My intent was to conduct research on her writing of the “Lives of the Mayfair Witches,” series, which I managed to do. But I couldn’t help but get pulled away from the task at hand while hanging on every word, however seemingly trivial (apparently she really liked train sets) that this author whom I’ve loved since a young teenager wrote in her own scrawling handwriting.

In one journal entry from July 29, 1985, written on a morning that Rice notes as being foggy, she outlines a “fact sheet” from NBC that includes a rundown of the key characteristics for the main characters from “Interview with the Vampire,” Louis, Lestat and Claudia. Up in the lefthand margin she writes “IWTV – fact sheet for their crummy script.”

And in 2002, a message from Rice transcribed from a fan phone line she used to maintain details yet another adaptation that never worked out, also for NBC, which was to be a “The Witching Hour” miniseries with a script written by John Wilder.

“After three scripts and many meetings, this production was scrapped as well,” Rice writes in an update posted to her website. “We were all very disappointed.”

As you can see, the writer had a vision for adaptations of her work, and studios never seemed to meet her standards.

The writer had a vision for adaptations of her work and studios never seemed to meet her standards.

“Even when an author works closely with the director, the writer or the actors, the author’s voice is only one of many,” Rice writes. “Those controlling the financing for a project can shut the production down. Sometimes those who decide the fate of a production have never read the author’s books, and have little or no idea as to what the books are about.”

SEARCHLIGHT PICTURES PRESENTS – THE MENU film A MUST SEE

i will tell you why I feel this way the plot was refreshing but unlike TV show #Hannibal the food that was served up was at a minimum. THE MENU is billed as a horror comedy my partner fell asleep watching it. Maybe she was tired but maybe it was too slow for her and she is the one who loves cooking shows. It was more of a REVENGE HORROR film presented in a painstakingly deliberate beat that gave it a thriller image.

Plot is right out of Agatha Christie – a rich elitist crowd of egotistical foodies descent on a island off the shore for a mysterious 6 course meal by a famous brooding chef and his staff who have dedicated their entire existence to serve HIM. What follows is a series of stories within the plot for EACH CHARACTER who affected the CHEF who has offered the meal in revenge for what he thought they did to crash his love of cooking.

This is an EPIC HORROR film without a lot of blood It is a contemporary take on a REVENGE story that does not really reveal itself until the very end of the film. I found it completely engrossing right to the very end.

WATCH #themenu you won’t be disappointed.

Writing a Screenplay starts with an IDEA

Everyone has them. Writing a screenplay starts with an IDEA but you cannot copyright an idea so you would have to write a TREATMENT on your idea and expand that to fit the form of whichever genre you are wanting to achieve.

So there are several different Script Types that I’m talking about: 1 is a Theater Play which can be performed on Broadway or Off-Broadway. Then there is a Teleplay that is a script made for Television or a Mini-Series (more than one episode), then the last type is a script for a Television series that is ongoing year to year hopefully. One other type is a short film or short film for television. I like to tape shorts for short film festival and most of that is sketch comedy with a few actors and a short script under 10 mins.

Each of these types of scripts are FORM driven in that they each have a separate type of Form they adhere to. Script pages for a film are usually 2 hours long or 120 mins which equals to 120 pages as each written page equals one minute. Quentin Tarantino writes long scripts some of them are over 2 hours and that page count is still the same – 1 minute per page.

A TREATMENT is not the actual script. A Treatment is the outline of the script you will write AFTER you write down your idea. I think of it as a map to writing my script. Most writers don’t write the script in one seating so they will have to go back to the script to complete it over several days or weeks or months. In order to organize your script you must have a cohesive TREATMENT to WRITE FROM. In the Treatment you will write down your LOGLINE – a brief elevator pitch of what your original idea is about. 2ndly you will write down a short SYNOPSIS of what your script is about BUT NEVER GIVE THEM THE ENDING. Then write down your CAST OF CHARACTERS. It’s best to keep them under 10 characters unless you are writing a script like WAR AND PEACE or GONE WITH THE WIND with a lot of different characters.

LOGLINES-When writing a logline remember these 3 points: WHEN, THEN, UNTIL…. examples:

“Star Wars: A New Hope.” “When an optimistic farm boy discovers that he has powers, (THEN) he teams up with other rebel fighters (UNTIL) to liberate the galaxy from the sinister forces of the Empire.”

“Titanic”: WHEN Two star-crossed lovers meet & fall in love on the maiden voyage of the Titanic and THEN struggle to survive as the ship sinks into the Atlantic Ocean UNTIL they hold out hope they will survive the maritime disaster.”

The Godfather”: “The aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son.”

Reservoir Dogs”: “After a simple jewelry heist goes terribly wrong, the surviving criminals begin to suspect that one of them is a police informant.”

After you write your LOGLINE, SYNOPSIS, CAST OF CHARACTERS you are now at the point of writing down your actual TREATMENT which is a SCENE BY SCENE detail of what will happen in each scene with your characters. When you introduce a character for the first time you usually CAPITALIZE that character’s name. in the Scene by Scene treatment of your script you can write “funny lines for that character” that pop into your head, ACTION that those characters take in that SCENE and so forth.

If you write your treatment in this way you will be able to leave your script for a day, a month or months and go back to it and take up where you left off because you already wrote a treatment that is the map to the script you are writing. Meaning that you won’t waste valuable time when returning to your script. Even during the writing of the script from the treatment ideas for scenes can change and I usually notate them in the treatment first and then make the change or add that idea into the script itself.

After the script is finished have friends gather and have an impromptu reading so you can hear the script. Then hold a real reading of the script with real actors and a person with a theatrical clear voice as the NARRATOR. I urge every single person who is an aspiring writer to join the DRAMATISTS GUILD, which is a Dot Org and they are also on line. Please look them up and join as an ASSOCIATE MEMBER. There are tons of benefits and you will be able to go to free & discounted lectures for writers, playwrights, musicians, composers. They are a mandatory organization for me to join. One last thing – when you finish your script via your TREATMENT – put both TREATMENT & SCRIPT INTO THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS FOR COPYRIGHT. if for some reason you change or add something of important to the copyrighted script you should copyright it again and us the US Copyright # you received from first Copyright to link it to the new copyright of your work.

Next article will be next week when we and our actors meet for the first time for our POT LUCK PARTY & FIRST REHEARSAL on Saturday Jan 14, 2023. For awhile I will be writing about our upcoming reading for our SCRIPTED READ VEGAS coming up in June of this year.

VEGAS LOGLINE – When 2 mentally challenged young adults meet each other and fall in love, they plan to run to VEGAS to marry, until the boy’s father and social morays of the time threaten to separate them forever.

Here’s the question – if you were a LEAD PRODUCER would you be interested in getting investors for this script?

EMANCIPATION – Will Smith Movie

We are watching EMANCIPATION tonight. It is 12:16am 16 mins into the new year and we are remembering some of the terrible milestones that happened online between the WOKE crowd & their wanting to bring down symbols of the old south, which I totally disagreed with; to the opposition of the uber right that holds everything evil – dear.

To recount the evil anti-slavery remarks on social media platforms and anti-semitic on those same platforms is unacceptable in 2023 or any other year. I blame the education system who pushed through people without incentive to actually learn something. They did not go to college nor did they go to trade school. Many of them have absolutely no skills whatsoever to make them productive citizens. So they hate. They hate others who took the initiative to learn, to grow and to work with the skills they learned.

Taking down the statues and putting up new statues of dead black civilians who died suicide by cop is wrong if the statues of the Confederacy are gone. I see it as a CAUSE (SLAVERY, THE SOUTH & THE CONFEDERACY) & EFFECT (the victims of police brutality in the 21st Century and before), Keep them both up or one day all of them will be forgotten. If cities object to having these reminders in their midst put them into museums but don’t sell them to private rich citizens who will just keep them in their homes as a matter of pride.

Our American History is important and these are symbols of a very bad time in our history. We weren’t here but people who come after us will surely hear about the slavery in the south of our country. If they don’t teach that – all is lost. We will repeat these offences again because we were not reminded. We will have forgotten. This CAN NEVER HAPPEN IN AMERICA AGAIN.

PETER was a slave treated like a dog. He had a wife and 4 children. He was a proud Haitian and a slave. He survived Louisiana swamps to make it to Lincoln’s army in Baton Rouge. He became a member of the Union Army and later found his wife and children and they were all free. They called him GORDON but in America he was WHIPPED PETER

There are all kinds of slavery in the world. HUMAN TRAFFICKING, HOMELESSNESS, PRISON, DRUG AND ALCOHOL ADDICTION and the list goes on and on. We must continue our fight to end these and other means of slavery in our country. There should be NO POOR PEOPLE in this United States.

Lastly, and I know everyone saw the “slap” heard around the world when #willsmith open handed #chrisrock at #oscars2022. However, I got to write this – his performance in this film is noteworthy and worthy of another Oscar for this film but since he’s been suspended he won’t win shit which is dead wrong. I know what he did was emotional and on behalf of his ridiculous wife but acting is a skil. It’s an artistic way of being someone completely different than yourself. Will Smith has come a long damn way and frankly he deserves it-dude worked hard to get to where he got in life. If anyone should be shunned it’s his wife, #JADAPINKETTSMITH who instigated that nonsense with A LOOK.

That’s my opinion. I urge you to watch this film. From a writer’s Point of View (POV) it’s a wonderful script. From an acting pov it’s brilliant.

Have a great NY Day

THE WRITING BLOG: The Journey

Int. NYC - Early Evening
I walked around a bit until I came to the Center of my universe. I was there to meet a new friend. Little did I know that we would become more than just friends. We were destined to become besties, lovers and married after 13 years of cohab. 3 years in Manhattan & the rest in NJ up to current time. But at the beginning of our life together I could only imagine my future and I was determined NOT to spend it alone.

When a writer takes on a project to create a script it’s a commitment much like a marriage vow. You commit to writing at least a 120 page idea which translates to 1 minute per page of either action, dialog or both. Your script will have characters, arcs for those characters, a plot, a twist, music, an emotional pull for the audience to grasp and become involved with and if you are lucky your script will get picked up by a production company and you will develop a fanbase commonly called a FANDOM for your show.

FANDOMS are very influential in the development of your script, characters, dialog and plot. They can literally influence your decisions about all of those points, especially if your script becomes a popular TV show like #EVIL, #KILLINGEVE, #THEGOODFIGHT, #SUCCESSION….you get the idea. Executive Producers sometimes tease fans about a certain plot point or, In the case of some Hollywood writers they will take fans suggestions and run with them. (You cannot copyright an idea so if they take your suggestion – be happy)

A popular example I love to discuss with others is Producer BRYAN FULLER’s allegiance to his fandom for the TV series #HANNIBAL. He literally created several endings in this series’ Last season to appease the ardent fans. His creative choices were influenced by the ardent fans of that series. On some level the other gay Showrunner, RYAN MURPHY will also listen to the fandom and take a piece of what they suggest to heart and you may see it on your TV set.

#TVSeries or #MiniSeries’ are popular now as are #DOCUMENTARIES. There are so many on a variety of subjects like #TRUECRIME, #SERIALKILLERS, #MISSINGCHILDREN and #FAMOUSPEOPLE who are now dead. Each of these shows are connected to #socialmedia sites, #fandomfiction sites and #networksites that advertise for the series’ on their platforms.

COGNITIVE FUNGUS PRODUCTIONS LLC is a multi-media company that works with music, Film & Theater Scripts & their Readings moving into finding investors/funding, and we are also a production company that films other people’s readings, actor headshots and rehearsals.
